Bengaluru Southern Corridor Project Enters Next Stage

A proposed 18.5-km elevated corridor between Ragigudda and Kanakapura Road is set to become a major addition to Bengaluru’s southern transport network, with the project intended to provide a faster alternative to one of the city’s heavily congested road corridors. The ₹2,283-crore proposal is now moving towards implementation, but its long-term value will depend on how effectively it integrates with existing public transport and surface roads.

The corridor is being developed through Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited and is planned as a toll-based project. The proposed alignment will begin around Ragigudda Junction and extend towards the NICE Road connection near Thalaghattapura, broadly following the existing road network. The project is designed to address a persistent capacity problem. Traffic on parts of the Ragigudda-Kanakapura Road corridor frequently moves slowly during peak periods, while dense development leaves limited space for conventional road widening. An elevated structure offers a way to add through-traffic capacity without acquiring large amounts of additional land at surface level. However, adding road capacity does not automatically resolve congestion. Experience from growing metropolitan areas shows that new road space can attract additional private vehicle trips, particularly when alternative public transport connections are insufficient. The project’s impact will therefore depend on whether it reduces bottlenecks across the wider network rather than simply shifting them to entry and exit points. The Bengaluru elevated corridor will also operate alongside an established public transport environment.

The Green Line of Namma Metro serves the Kanakapura Road side of the corridor, making integration between the elevated road, metro stations and bus services important for the area’s overall mobility. The toll structure adds another layer to the discussion. While user charges can support the financial sustainability of large infrastructure projects, they can also influence who uses the facility. Commuters unable or unwilling to pay may continue using surface roads, making it important that those roads remain safe, functional and adequately maintained. There are environmental considerations as well. Elevated construction can reduce the need for extensive land acquisition, but large-scale infrastructure still involves significant material use, construction emissions and disruption. Designing the project around existing rights of way, protecting trees and minimising construction impacts will be important if the corridor is to contribute to more resilient urban growth. The project is part of a wider proposal for elevated corridors across Bengaluru. Such investments could improve movement on selected routes, but their success should be measured through travel reliability, public transport integration, road safety and accessibility—not simply kilometres of elevated road constructed.

For southern Bengaluru, the immediate expectation is faster and more predictable movement. The longer-term challenge is ensuring that additional road capacity works within a broader mobility system where metro, buses, walking and cycling remain viable alternatives. The Bengaluru elevated corridor can help address a genuine transport bottleneck, but its success will ultimately depend on how well the city manages the roads and neighbourhoods around it.
