Bengaluru Roads Face Fresh Questions Over Maintenance

Bengaluru’s deteriorating roads and incomplete civic works have renewed scrutiny of the city’s approach to infrastructure maintenance, with concerns spanning potholes, damaged footpaths, open drains and prolonged roadworks. The latest criticism highlights a wider urban problem: maintaining existing infrastructure is becoming as important as building new projects as the city continues to expand.

A key industrial corridor in Bengaluru has been reported to have around 350 potholes along a roughly seven-kilometre stretch, despite serving more than 1,000 industries. The absence of basic footpaths has added to concerns about how safely workers and other pedestrians can access workplaces along the corridor. The problem is not limited to industrial areas. Residents in established neighbourhoods have also raised concerns about damaged pavements, exposed drains, construction debris and road sections remaining under repair for extended periods. Such conditions can turn routine journeys into safety risks, particularly for pedestrians, older residents and people with mobility challenges. For businesses, road quality is an operational issue rather than merely an aesthetic one. Poor surfaces can increase vehicle maintenance costs, slow freight movement and make employee commutes less predictable. On industrial corridors, repeated disruptions can affect supply chains and reduce the efficiency of areas that support Bengaluru’s wider economy. The persistence of unfinished works also raises questions about project coordination. Roads are frequently opened for drainage, water, electricity, telecommunications and other infrastructure works. When agencies operate without effective scheduling and restoration standards, the same stretch can face repeated excavation, leaving residents with prolonged disruption and increasing maintenance costs.

There is a strong pedestrian dimension to the problem. A road network cannot be considered functional if its pavements are broken, blocked or absent. Safe walking routes are particularly important around industrial areas, public transport stops, schools and commercial districts, where many people depend on walking for part of their daily journey. Bengaluru’s monsoon conditions add another layer of risk. Potholes can expand rapidly when water enters damaged road surfaces, while blocked drains can worsen local flooding. Coordinating road repairs with stormwater management could therefore reduce both maintenance costs and weather-related disruption. The city also needs to move from reactive repairs towards predictable asset management. A road inventory recording surface condition, drainage, footpaths and maintenance history could help authorities prioritise the most vulnerable corridors before deterioration becomes expensive to reverse. Funding models and accountability matter as well. Long-term maintenance contracts can potentially provide more consistent outcomes than repeated emergency patching, but only when performance standards are measurable and independently monitored. The current concerns should therefore be viewed as a test of Bengaluru’s infrastructure governance rather than a series of isolated pothole complaints.

New roads and major transport projects may attract attention, but the everyday quality of existing streets determines how efficiently people and goods move through the city. For Bengaluru, improving road infrastructure will require more than filling potholes. Reliable footpaths, functioning drains, coordinated utility works and timely resurfacing need to become part of a single maintenance framework. A city that is expanding rapidly must ensure that its existing public infrastructure does not deteriorate faster than it can be repaired.
