An 18-year-old Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo has completed a roughly 1,800-km road journey connecting Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ooty, offering an unusual example of how long a well-maintained vehicle can remain useful. The journey has drawn attention to vehicle longevity, maintenance and the environmental implications of replacing older cars before the end of their practical operating life.
The car, an early-generation Zen Estilo, was used for a multi-city journey covering Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ooty before returning to Hyderabad. The trip included a combination of highways, city traffic and hill roads, demonstrating the demands placed on an ageing vehicle during long-distance travel.The significance of the Bengaluru road trip extends beyond the vehicle itself. Cars are increasingly judged through age-based assumptions, even though actual condition depends heavily on maintenance, usage, safety standards and component reliability. An older vehicle that remains mechanically sound can sometimes continue serving its owner effectively without requiring immediate replacement. That does not mean vehicle age should be ignored. Safety technology, crash protection, emissions performance and fuel efficiency have improved significantly over the past two decades. Older vehicles may lack features that are now considered essential, while ageing components can require more frequent inspection and replacement.
There is also an environmental trade-off. Replacing a functioning vehicle with a new one avoids some tailpipe emissions, but manufacturing a replacement vehicle requires significant materials, energy and industrial processing. Extending the useful life of a vehicle can therefore reduce some of the environmental costs associated with premature replacement, provided the vehicle remains safe and reasonably efficient. For Bengaluru, where road congestion and vehicle ownership continue to grow, the issue has a broader mobility dimension. The city cannot address transport emissions simply by replacing older private vehicles. Expanding reliable public transport, improving walking and cycling infrastructure and reducing the need for unnecessary car journeys can have a greater long-term effect on urban mobility. The Bengaluru road trip also highlights the importance of maintenance culture. Regular servicing, tyre checks, brake inspections and timely replacement of worn components are essential for older vehicles, particularly before long-distance journeys and hill travel. At the same time, vehicle longevity should not become an argument against cleaner transport standards. Cities need policies that balance road safety and air-quality objectives with the economic realities faced by households that cannot easily afford newer vehicles.
The 1,800-km journey is ultimately a reminder that the environmental footprint of mobility is influenced not only by what people drive, but also by how often they drive and how efficiently cities provide alternatives.Bengaluru’s long-term transport challenge will require both better-maintained vehicles and a stronger shift towards shared, public and lower-carbon modes of travel.
