Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway AI Cameras Spot 12,000 Violations in 15 days

Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway has recorded over 12,000 traffic violations in just 15 days, thanks to the deployment of advanced AI-based surveillance systems. This initiative has significantly improved compliance with traffic laws and highlighted key areas of concern for motorists.

From May 1 to May 15, a staggering 12,192 cases were registered, primarily for the failure to wear seat belts. The AI cameras, operating with high precision, have been instrumental in identifying these violations and capturing footage of drivers and passengers neglecting this crucial safety measure. Consequently, notices are issued to vehicle owners, who are required to visit the traffic station within seven days to settle the fines. Failure to comply may result in legal action.

Karnataka’s Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Alok Kumar, underscored the effectiveness of the surveillance system, stating that no violation can escape the scrutiny of these powerful cameras, whether it’s day or night. He also emphasised the importance of refraining from using mobile phones while driving, a persistent issue that poses significant risks.

In addition to enforcing seat belt usage, the AI surveillance system targets speeding, another major cause of road accidents. Highway patrol vehicles are strategically deployed to complement the AI cameras, ensuring that speed limits are strictly enforced. This comprehensive approach aims to reduce traffic violations and enhance safety on the expressway. Measures have also been taken to protect two-wheeler riders, who are particularly vulnerable on high-speed roads. Furthermore, the movement of certain vehicles, such as tricycles and tractors, has been restricted on the expressway to minimise the risk of accidents.

The implementation of AI-driven surveillance technology has marked a transformative step in traffic management on the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway. By significantly reducing the number of traffic violations, this initiative has already demonstrated its potential to improve road safety and protect lives.

This technological advancement is part of a broader trend towards leveraging AI and other digital tools in public safety initiatives. As these systems become more widespread, they offer a promising solution to persistent issues in traffic enforcement, enabling authorities to maintain a more vigilant and effective presence on critical roadways. The success of the AI surveillance system on the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway sets a precedent for similar initiatives across other regions, paving the way for smarter, safer, and more efficient road management strategies. By addressing key safety concerns and enforcing traffic regulations rigorously, these measures are expected to contribute significantly to reducing road accidents and fatalities.
