The Bengaluru South City Corporation has fined Al-Shifa Polyclinic ₹15,000 after medical and mixed waste linked to the facility was found dumped along a roadside near Srinivagilu and Mangammanapalya Main Road.
A team of junior health inspectors from the BTM Layout division found medicine packages, medical waste and mixed garbage at the site during an inspection, K.N. Ramesh, South Corporation Commissioner, said on Tuesday. Prescription slips and documents recovered from the spot helped officials identify the waste as belonging to the polyclinic.
The corporation said the clinic was fined for violating the Solid Waste Management Rules and for failing to comply with norms applicable to bulk waste generators. The enforcement action places responsibility not only on municipal teams to remove waste from public spaces, but also on healthcare establishments to segregate and transfer their waste through authorised channels.
According to the corporation, officials also sensitised the clinic’s doctors and staff about proper disposal procedures. The facility was instructed to hand over its medical and solid waste to authorised agencies for scientific disposal.
The case involves both medical waste and mixed garbage, making the roadside dumping an issue of civic sanitation as well as compliance with healthcare waste-handling requirements. Medicine packages and prescription documents also made it possible for inspectors to trace the waste to a specific establishment.
The corporation said hospitals, clinics, laboratories and other commercial establishments found dumping waste in public places would face regular inspections, heavy fines and legal action. The warning broadens the enforcement focus beyond the individual clinic to other healthcare and commercial establishments operating in the South Corporation area.
The action comes as municipal authorities continue to rely on inspections, penalties and authorised waste-handling arrangements to address illegal dumping. For establishments generating medical waste, the corporation’s direction is that such material must be handed over to authorised agencies rather than disposed of with roadside or unsegregated garbage.
The corporation has not announced any further penalty against the clinic beyond the ₹15,000 fine. Its stated next steps are continued inspections and legal action against establishments found dumping waste in public places.
