Bengaluru-Hosur Road Rail Girders Promise Relief at Chandapura

Bengaluru’s congested Hosur Road corridor moved closer to traffic relief after two 61-metre rail girders were launched over National Highway 44 at Chandapura on Wednesday, removing the need for an intermediate pier in the highway carriageway.

The work is part of the delayed 48-km Byappanahalli-Hosur railway doubling project being implemented by the Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka), or K-Ride. The agency said the girder launch was a major engineering milestone for the project and that the Anekal-Heelalige section is expected to be commissioned before February 2027.

The first girder was launched on October 10, while the second was placed on Wednesday. The twin structures are designed to carry two railway lines on a common substructure. K-Ride said the arrangement would allow the highway span to remain unobstructed without a railway pier standing within the road carriageway.

A pier currently located in the middle of the road has narrowed the usable traffic space and contributed to severe movement restrictions at the construction site. K-Ride said the pier, along with temporary structures installed for the works, is expected to be removed. The two girders are described as the longest used in a railway doubling project in Bengaluru.

The Chandapura intervention is significant because the NH44 section serves one of the city’s busiest outward corridors, connecting Bengaluru with Hosur and supporting daily commuter, industrial and logistics movement. The report did not provide a revised traffic timeline for the removal of the existing pier or temporary structures, but the planned clearance is expected to restore space on the highway span.

K-Ride managing director Lakshman Singh said the Anekal-Heelalige line would be commissioned before February 2027. In a statement, the agency said the unobstructed span would accommodate the planned highway configuration and strengthen regional connectivity, transport and logistics movement, industrial and commercial activity, and capacity along the Bengaluru-Hosur corridor.

Once the associated railway works are completed, the existing bridge can be demolished and the long-awaited highway improvements can proceed, according to K-Ride. The full doubling project is intended to increase rail capacity and provide greater operating flexibility for both passenger and freight services between Bengaluru and Hosur.
