Bengaluru Hosts Cauvery Aarti to Boost Water Conservation

Bengaluru is set to host its first-ever Cauvery Aarti on March 21 at Sankey Tank in Sadashivanagar. The event, organised by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) in collaboration with various partner organisations, is designed to both honour the Cauvery River Bengaluru’s primary water lifeline and highlight the urgent need for sustainable water management practices.

The Cauvery Aarti will not only pay homage to this revered river, but also serve as a powerful platform to convey the pressing need for water conservation. During the ritual, the sacred water from Bhagamandala in Kodagu will be ceremoniously brought to Bengaluru in traditional pots, reinforcing the spiritual connection the city shares with Cauvery. This symbolic gesture is set to be a central part of the event, with prayers invoking blessings for the river and the city’s water supply. Speaking on the occasion, the BWSSB Chairman underscored the vital importance of Cauvery in shaping both the history and future of Karnataka, particularly Bengaluru.

The river, which has long supported agriculture, daily life, and economic development, continues to play a key role in providing water to the city’s expanding population. However, with increasing water stress and challenges surrounding water availability, the Chairman stressed the collective responsibility to conserve this invaluable resource. The event will be accompanied by the launch of the World Water Pledge, aimed at encouraging citizens to commit to water-saving practices in their daily lives. This includes steps like the efficient use of treated wastewater, which will significantly reduce the strain on fresh water sources.

Moreover, the message of the event will promote other sustainable practices such as groundwater recharge and rainwater harvesting two critical areas that hold the key to securing Bengaluru’s water future. The Cauvery Aarti also seeks to highlight the importance of integrating modern solutions, like the reuse of treated water, to manage Bengaluru’s growing water demands. Educational campaigns during the event will focus on how citizens can adopt these practices and contribute to preserving the city’s water resources, ensuring that future generations continue to benefit from the Cauvery River.

As Bengaluru grapples with the pressures of rapid urbanisation and climate change, events like the Cauvery Aarti serve as a timely reminder of the importance of sustainable water management. They not only celebrate the spiritual significance of water but also spark important conversations about how we can all play our part in preserving this essential resource.
