The initiative reflects a broader shift in how rapidly growing urban centres are managing water scarcity while supporting industrial and economic activity.

Several apartment complexes equipped with sewage treatment plants (STPs) have started channeling surplus treated water for industrial applications, replacing a portion of the freshwater traditionally consumed by factories. The move comes as Bengaluru continues to face recurring concerns over groundwater depletion, rising water demand and climate-related supply uncertainties.For years, many housing communities generated large volumes of treated wastewater but struggled to find productive uses for the excess supply. In several cases, apartment associations reported storage limitations and inadequate distribution mechanisms, resulting in treated water being underutilised despite growing demand across the wider urban economy.The emerging treated water reuse model seeks to bridge that gap. Residential projects with functioning sewage treatment infrastructure may increasingly become active participants in the city’s resource recovery ecosystem.This could create additional revenue opportunities for housing communities while encouraging stronger compliance with environmental regulations and water-efficiency standards.Industry stakeholders have long advocated for reliable alternatives to freshwater sources, particularly following periods of acute water stress in the region.Industrial clusters, technology parks and data centres are expected to require increasing quantities of non-potable water in the coming years, making treated water reuse an important component of long-term urban resilience planning.However, challenges remain.Previous efforts to connect residential treatment systems with industrial consumers were slowed by limited transport infrastructure, weak market linkages and inconsistent demand.
