Begging-Free Indore Drive Rescues Eight Ahead of Diwali

Indore administration has launched a ‘Begging-Free Indore’ campaign ahead of Diwali and other festivals, rescuing eight people during a recent operation across the Mill area, Pardeshipura and Patnipura, according to the Women and Child Development Department.

The latest action was carried out by a dedicated team formed for the campaign. Department programme officer Rajnish Sinha said the team is regularly moving through different parts of the city to identify people engaged in begging and take necessary action.

During the latest round, the team first covered the Mill area before proceeding to Pardeshipura and Patnipura. It also conducted searches at Shani Temple and other religious places along the route, the department said.

The campaign includes continuous monitoring of major squares, markets, religious places and other public spaces. Officials said these locations are being watched because they typically see higher footfall during the festival season, when the number of people seeking alms in busy public areas may also increase.

The administration’s approach places the Women and Child Development Department at the centre of the city’s current enforcement and monitoring effort. Teams are visiting identified locations, checking for people engaged in begging and taking action as part of the campaign’s stated objective of making Indore free of begging.

The report does not specify the legal procedure followed in the eight cases, where the rescued people were taken, or whether the campaign includes shelter, rehabilitation, family reunification or livelihood support. It also does not provide a target date, the total number of teams involved or a citywide count of people affected by the drive.

Sinha said monitoring would continue across markets, major intersections, religious places and other public spaces. The department is expected to maintain vigilance through the festival period and take further action as its teams move through different parts of Indore.
