The Barapullah Phase 3 flyover in Delhi will be inaugurated on 29 September, completing a long-delayed road link between Mayur Vihar Phase 1 and Sarai Kale Khan and creating a signal-free route towards AIIMS and south Delhi, according to Delhi Public Works Department Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh.
Singh announced the schedule after visiting the project site on Saturday to review final preparations and inspect the construction work. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to inaugurate the corridor, the minister said.
The newly completed section connects with the existing Barapullah corridor at Sarai Kale Khan. With this link, the entire corridor will extend for approximately 9 kilometres, according to the minister. The project is intended to improve movement between eastern and southern Delhi by completing the road connection between Mayur Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan.
The government says the corridor will allow commuters travelling from Mayur Vihar Phase 1 towards AIIMS to make a signal-free journey. It also expects the project to reduce traffic-related delays and save travel time on the route. The extent of those savings and the traffic volume the corridor will carry were not specified in the report.
The project includes facilities beyond the vehicle carriageway. According to the Delhi government, the flyover has provisions for a cycle track and has been designed with pedestrian movement in mind. These elements are intended to support access for cyclists and pedestrians alongside improved vehicle connectivity.
The Barapullah Phase 3 project was approved in 2014 and construction began in 2015, with completion originally targeted for 2017. The project subsequently faced delays for several reasons, while its estimated cost increased over time to approximately Rs 1,635 crore, according to the report.
Singh said on his X account that Delhi had been waiting for the project for a decade and that the wait would end with the 29 September inauguration. He also claimed that a project delayed for years had been completed in one and a half years. The minister linked the completion to the Delhi government’s focus on finishing and commissioning long-pending projects under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The corridor’s opening will mark the completion of a road connection that the government says has remained pending between Mayur Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan. The next formal milestone is the scheduled inauguration on 29 September, after which the operational impact on traffic and commuter movement will become clear.
