August auto sales reached their highest-ever level for the month across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers, with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) attributing the growth to strong consumer demand, resilient rural markets and improving financing conditions ahead of the festive season.
Domestic passenger vehicle sales rose to 3,74,056 units in August from 2,80,900 units a year earlier, according to SIAM’s segment-wise data. Utility vehicles accounted for the largest share of the passenger-vehicle market, with sales increasing to 2,50,084 units from 1,79,613 units.
Vehicles priced below ₹20 lakh recorded particularly strong demand. The UVC segment, comprising vehicles shorter than 4,000 mm and priced below ₹20 lakh, reported sales of 97,881 units, up from 73,504 units a year earlier. The UV1 segment recorded 86,935 units, compared with 59,280 units in August last year.
Passenger car sales also increased in the compact category, which rose to 1,29,529 units from 99,541 units. Mid-size car sales, however, declined to 12,898 units from 15,564 units. In cumulative terms, passenger vehicle domestic sales between April and August reached 20,44,696 units, compared with 15,94,035 units during the same period a year earlier.
Three-wheeler sales rose 22.8% year on year to 93,764 units in August from 76,324 units. Passenger carriers made up most of the segment, with sales increasing to 78,680 units from 64,294 units. Goods carriers also recorded growth, reaching 13,320 units from 9,876 units.
The increase was not uniform across all three-wheeler categories. Electric rickshaw sales declined to 1,264 units from 1,344 units, while e-cart sales fell to 500 units from 810 units. Total three-wheeler domestic sales for April-August stood at 4,03,717 units, up from 3,12,759 units in the year-earlier period.
Two-wheeler sales crossed 20 lakh units, rising 10.5% to 20,34,698 units from 18,41,954 units. Scooters were the strongest contributor, with sales increasing 23.8% to 8,55,715 units. Motorcycle sales rose 2.4% to 11,33,047 units, while moped sales grew 4.7% to 45,936 units.
Electric two-wheelers also recorded a sharp increase. Sales of electric scooters above 250 watts rose to 1,85,303 units in August from 81,017 units a year earlier, according to the SIAM report. Overall two-wheeler domestic sales between April and August reached 96,23,709 units, compared with 81,05,098 units in the same period last year.
SIAM said the comparison benefited from a low base in August last year, when sales were subdued ahead of the September 2025 goods and services tax rate cuts. Automakers subsequently reduced prices to pass on the tax benefit, supporting demand.
Rajesh Menon, director general of SIAM, said passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers had each recorded their highest-ever August sales in 2026. He cited consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, improving financing conditions and growing adoption of alternative powertrains as factors supporting the industry.
The industry body expects the festive season to provide an additional boost to sales and contribute to a healthy second quarter. The next key indicator will be whether the August momentum is sustained across vehicle categories as festive demand develops.
