TIRUVANNAMALAI | September 9, 2026 — The Arani Glass Palace restoration is nearing completion after the more than 200-year-old structure in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai district was brought under government protection following years of neglect and deterioration.
Known locally as the Glass Palace, the historic building is located deep inside a forest area about three kilometres from Poosimalaikuppam village near Arani. Restoration and renovation work is being carried out by the Public Works Department, with the project expected to be completed within a few days, according to a report by ANI.
Historians believe the palace was built around 200 years ago by Jagir Thirumalai Rao, described as a local ruler or zamindar. The structure was reportedly designed in an elegant European architectural style for a woman he loved. Its popular name comes from its distinctive glass elements and architectural details.
The building had deteriorated over several years because of neglect and inadequate maintenance. Several elements, including doors, glass panels and iron frames, were reportedly removed and stolen by unidentified persons. The damage left the structure close to complete ruin, prompting historians to call for government intervention and restoration.
In 2021, the Forest Department’s Arani Forest Range took control of the property. Forest officials subsequently fenced the premises and declared the area a protected site. The move placed the isolated structure within a formal protection framework before the current renovation work began.
The palace’s location inside a forest area has also shaped the way it can be accessed and managed. The report places it outside the immediate village settlement, making protection, maintenance and public access important considerations as the restoration reaches its final stage. Historians have urged the government to develop the site as a tourist destination so that visitors can learn about its architectural and historical significance.
A local resident told ANI that the palace had remained in a dilapidated condition since his childhood and said its restoration had revealed how magnificent it may have been during the period of the ruler. The resident also called for the Glass Palace to be formally declared a tourist destination.
The restored building has begun attracting attention for its unusual architectural character. However, the report does not specify whether a formal visitor plan, tourism infrastructure or public opening schedule has been announced. The Public Works Department is expected to complete the restoration and renovation work within the next few days.
