Anchorage Leads List of Greenest US Cities

As American cities grapple with climate risks, mental health crises, and uneven access to urban nature, a fresh data-led ranking sheds light on which urban areas are thriving when it comes to green infrastructure.

Anchorage, Alaska, has emerged as the greenest city in the United States, based on new research that analysed per capita parkland across more than 130 urban areas. The city offers an impressive 30,222 acres of green space per 10,000 residents—setting a national benchmark for public access to nature. While cold weather dominates much of Alaska’s climate, Anchorage’s summers are lush with greenery, thanks to its vast natural landscape and progressive urban planning. Kincaid Park, among the city’s most visited green spaces, draws residents year-round for outdoor recreation, including biking, hiking, cross-country skiing and birdwatching. Such access has not only ecological benefits but contributes to reducing carbon footprints, managing urban runoff, and boosting physical and mental health outcomes.

Second on the list is Chesapeake, Virginia, where a robust parks system accounts for 27.3 per cent of the city’s total area. Known for its wetlands and family-friendly public spaces, Chesapeake has successfully integrated nature into its urban fabric. The city has also been investing in ecological preservation while promoting inclusive recreational amenities—an approach that increasingly defines 21st-century urban sustainability.Rounding out the top three is Scottsdale, Arizona, which has bucked stereotypes about desert cities by delivering over 1,280 acres of parkland per 10,000 residents. The city’s green spaces include Chaparral Park, a sprawling community hub that mixes athletic facilities, trails and shaded spaces—proving that even in arid regions, urban greening can be ambitious and inclusive.

Other cities in the top ten, such as Fremont (California), Jacksonville (Florida), Honolulu (Hawaii), and New Orleans (Louisiana), are demonstrating how green infrastructure can be scaled across diverse geographies—from coastal zones to drylands—while addressing the environmental and social dimensions of urban living. For cities like North Las Vegas and Santa Clarita, the push towards more green space is also a bid to confront the growing impacts of urban heat, air pollution, and housing inequity. These findings spotlight a broader shift in urban policy discourse, where green equity and sustainable design are now being prioritised alongside traditional infrastructure. With global urban populations swelling and climate risks intensifying, the integration of parks, wetlands, tree corridors and biodiversity into city planning is no longer optional—it is essential.
India, where urban green cover remains far below global averages, can draw critical lessons from this ranking. As cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru prepare climate action plans, embedding equitable green spaces into transport, housing and health initiatives could define the future of resilient Indian urbanism.
