AMC Venues Found Lacking Fire Safety Measures

A critical lapse in fire safety measures across 66 Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) owned buildings has come to light, casting a shadow over the city’s management of public spaces.

Recent inspections by AMC teams have revealed that numerous community halls and auditoriums, routinely rented out for events, are operating without the essential no-objection certificates (NOCs) required for fire safety. Prominent venues such as the Bhaskar Rai Pandya Community Hall in Bodakdev and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Navrangpura, which hosts cricket tournaments, are among the infractions. The absence of up-to-date fire safety equipment, alongside the disappearance of essential fire-fighting tools, underscores a severe oversight by the municipal authorities. This deficiency is reportedly exacerbated by the lack of security personnel, leading to the pilfering of safety apparatus.

Moreover, it appears that some facilities have neglected the mandatory renewal of fire safety NOCs, raising serious concerns about the commitment to public safety. This negligence is not only a regulatory failure but also a potential hazard for the numerous citizens who frequent these venues for various events. The AMC’s revelations signal a need for an urgent overhaul of safety protocols. Ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations is not merely a legal obligation but a fundamental responsibility to protect the lives of Ahmedabad’s residents. As the city grows and public events become more frequent, the importance of stringent fire safety measures cannot be overstated.

Immediate corrective actions, including the reassessment of all AMC-owned properties and stringent enforcement of safety norms, are imperative. The situation demands a proactive approach to reinstall trust and safety in community spaces, reflecting a municipal administration that prioritises the wellbeing of its citizens. In the wake of these revelations, the AMC must not only address the current deficiencies but also establish a robust monitoring system to prevent such oversights in the future. The safety of the public depends on unwavering vigilance and the timely implementation of comprehensive fire safety measures. “The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, despite being declared unsafe and prohibited for use since April 27, 2022, hosted a cricket tournament in Jan 2024,” said an AMC source. It lacks a fire NOC as well.
