Amazon has expanded its India logistics network ahead of the festive season, adding 20 fulfilment centres, six sort centres and 150 last-mile delivery stations across the country as part of an announced investment of more than ₹2,800 crore.
The expansion will increase Amazon’s total storage capacity in India by 50 per cent to 64 million cubic feet, the company said in a statement. The new facilities will be operated and managed by third-party logistics service providers.
The network expansion extends beyond the country’s major metropolitan areas. All six new sort centres are located in Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Meerut, Ramanagar, Raipur and Varanasi. Seven of the 20 new fulfilment centres are also being established in non-metro cities, according to the company.
Amazon’s fulfilment centres handle the storage and processing of products, while sort centres organise packages for onward movement. Last-mile delivery stations bring shipments closer to customers before the final delivery. Together, the facilities expand the physical infrastructure required to handle higher order volumes during the festive shopping period.
The 150 new last-mile delivery stations are spread across 118 cities. Twelve locations will receive an Amazon last-mile delivery station for the first time. These are Bhojpur, Bokajan, Jalaun, Jehanabad, Namsai, Puruliya, Ribhoi, Senapati, Sivasagar, Udalguri, Ukhrul and Wokha.
The company had earlier announced more than 1.6 lakh seasonal work opportunities across 400 cities to manage the expected increase in festive demand. The opportunities will cover metropolitan areas as well as Tier 2 and Tier 3 locations.
Abhinav Singh, Amazon’s Vice-President of Operations for India, APAC, Middle East, Turkiye and Africa, said the new facilities were operational and ready to serve customers ahead of the festive season. He said the investments would help the company respond to changing customer and seller needs, create tens of thousands of work opportunities and support economic growth in communities across the country.
The expansion places additional logistics capacity in smaller cities and in locations receiving their first Amazon last-mile delivery station. Amazon has not disclosed a city-wise breakdown of the 20 fulfilment centres or the investment allocated to each facility in the statement. The newly announced network and seasonal employment programme will support the company’s operations during the upcoming festive period.
