Residents along the Sardar Patel Ring Road (SP Ring Road) in Ahmedabad can expect significant relief from monsoon-related issues as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) nears completion of critical infrastructure projects.
These developments aim to address longstanding drainage and sewage challenges in areas such as Bopal, Shela, and Science City. The Western Main Trunk Line, a 28- to 29-km-long sewer line project, has reached approximately 90% completion. This trunk line will connect newly developed residential and commercial zones, including Bopal, Ghuma, Shilaj, Oganj, Shela, Science City, South Bopal, Applewood, Sanathal, Shantipura, and Fatehwadi. The system is designed to carry sewage from these areas to a treatment plant at Fatehpura, from where treated water will be released into the Sabarmati River. The infrastructure is expected to prevent issues like sewage backflow and waterlogging during heavy rainfall.
Similarly, the Eastern Main Trunk Line and drainage network have also seen significant progress. Areas including Odhav, Kathwada, Nava Naroda, Nava Nikol, Vinzol, Ramol-Hathijan, and Vastral are undergoing extensive development, necessitating robust drainage infrastructure. A tender of ₹112.38 crore was approved for this project, involving the laying of a rising main line from the Odhav sewage pumping station to the new Eastern Main Trunk Line. These infrastructure upgrades are part of a broader initiative to enhance urban planning and ensure sustainable development in Ahmedabad. The improvements aim to bolster resilience against monsoon-related challenges, promote environmental sustainability, and improve the quality of life for residents in the affected areas.
As the monsoon season approaches, the completion of these projects is expected to alleviate longstanding drainage issues, reduce the risk of flooding, and contribute to the overall development and sustainability of Ahmedabad’s urban landscape.
