The Union Cabinet has approved a significant expansion of Ahmedabad’s metro network, clearing a new airport-bound corridor that is expected to strengthen public transport connectivity and support the city’s long-term urban development strategy. The decision comes alongside approvals for new government office and residential infrastructure in Amaravati, signalling continued investment in public infrastructure across multiple regions.
The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A project will add approximately six kilometres to the existing network through a corridor linking Koteshwar Road with the city’s international airport. The extension will include a combination of elevated and underground sections with multiple stations intended to improve access between residential areas, commercial districts and major transport facilities. Urban mobility experts view airport metro links as critical infrastructure for growing metropolitan regions. By providing reliable rail access to aviation hubs, such projects can reduce dependence on private vehicles and taxis, ease pressure on road networks and encourage greater use of sustainable public transport. The expanded corridor is also expected to improve connectivity to planned sports and public infrastructure developments in northern Ahmedabad. Better integration between transport systems and emerging activity centres can encourage balanced urban growth while supporting future economic opportunities linked to tourism, events and business investment.
From an environmental standpoint, the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A initiative aligns with efforts to reduce carbon emissions by promoting electric mass transit over fossil fuel-dependent road transport. However, planners note that the environmental gains will depend on complementary investments in feeder services, pedestrian infrastructure and last-mile connectivity that make metro travel convenient for a wide range of users. Economic benefits are likely to extend beyond mobility improvements.
Infrastructure construction is expected to generate employment and stimulate demand across engineering, manufacturing and service sectors, while enhanced accessibility may increase investment around metro stations through transit-oriented development. Alongside the metro approval, the Cabinet also endorsed the development of central government office and residential facilities in Amaravati to consolidate administrative functions and improve operational efficiency.
