Ahmedabad: A new Centre of Excellence for Road Safety and Traffic Management is set to be established in Viramgam, marking a collaborative effort to strengthen evidence-based road safety practices, improve traffic management and reduce crash risks across Ahmedabad district. The initiative brings together public institutions and private sector support to advance safer and smarter mobility solutions.
The proposed Ahmedabad Road Safety Centre will be developed through a partnership between the Ahmedabad Rural Police and Honda Motor Company, with the project receiving ₹3 crore in funding under the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The facility is envisioned as a dedicated platform for research, training, technology adoption and inter-agency collaboration aimed at improving road safety outcomes. Officials said the centre will focus on analysing accident and traffic data to identify high-risk locations, monitor collision patterns and recommend improvements in road engineering, enforcement strategies and transport policies. Urban mobility experts increasingly regard data-driven decision-making as essential for reducing fatalities and ensuring infrastructure investments target the areas of greatest risk. The facility is also expected to pilot advanced traffic management technologies, including artificial intelligence-based surveillance, intelligent traffic systems and digital monitoring tools capable of detecting traffic violations and assessing congestion patterns. Existing CCTV infrastructure will support studies of traffic movement, enabling authorities to better understand road user behaviour and identify accident-prone corridors.
Beyond technology, the Ahmedabad Road Safety Centre will place significant emphasis on public awareness and institutional capacity building. Planned activities include road safety education campaigns, specialised training for police personnel and volunteers, and the development of standard operating procedures to improve emergency response during the critical “golden hour” following road crashes. Transport planners note that effective road safety strategies increasingly depend on integrating engineering, enforcement, education and emergency care rather than relying on enforcement measures alone. Coordinated action between police, healthcare providers, fire services and local authorities can significantly improve post-crash response while reducing fatalities and long-term injuries.
The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to reduce road traffic deaths through technology-enabled governance and safer infrastructure. India continues to record one of the world’s highest numbers of road fatalities, prompting growing investment in intelligent transport systems, data analytics and evidence-based safety interventions at both state and local levels. For Ahmedabad district, the Viramgam centre could become an important knowledge hub supporting safer transport planning and operational improvements. Urban development specialists believe such institutions can help cities move beyond reactive enforcement towards proactive risk management by combining research, digital technologies and community engagement. If implemented effectively, the centre has the potential to contribute not only to improved road safety performance but also to more resilient and people-centred urban mobility.
