Delhi Mandi Road Upgrade Eyes National Highway Status
Delhi’s push to expand the national highway network within the capital has brought renewed attention to an important transport corridor linking the city with neighbouring Haryana. A proposal seeking National Highway recognition for Mandi Road aims to improve cross-border mobility, reduce travel bottlenecks and support long-term regional connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR).
The proposed Mandi Road National Highway corridor stretches approximately 8.8 kilometres through south Delhi, connecting an existing national highway near Chhatarpur with the Gurugram–Faridabad route at the Delhi-Haryana border. If approved by the Union government, the road would come under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), allowing future planning, engineering and maintenance to follow national standards. The proposal reflects a wider shift in Delhi’s transport strategy, where improving links between the capital and surrounding urban centres is becoming increasingly important as commuter movement, freight transport and economic activity continue to expand across the NCR. Urban planners note that several secondary corridors have witnessed rising traffic volumes as motorists increasingly avoid congestion on major arterial roads. According to government officials, the road has already been identified in previous planning discussions as a strategically significant connector requiring widening and comprehensive infrastructure upgrades.
Bringing the corridor under the national highway network could create a more integrated approach to future expansion, while enabling coordinated planning between Delhi and neighbouring states. The Mandi Road National Highway proposal also carries broader implications beyond travel time. Better road infrastructure can improve logistics efficiency, strengthen supply chains serving industrial and commercial hubs, and enhance access to employment centres across Gurugram and Faridabad. However, transport specialists caution that road widening alone should not be viewed as a complete solution to urban mobility challenges. Experts argue that future upgrades should be accompanied by measures promoting safer pedestrian infrastructure, improved public transport integration, better drainage systems and climate-resilient road engineering. As extreme rainfall events become more frequent across northern India, resilient transport infrastructure is increasingly viewed as essential for maintaining mobility during adverse weather while reducing long-term maintenance costs.
For residents of south Delhi, the corridor functions as an important alternative route during peak-hour congestion. Improved capacity and better traffic management could ease pressure on existing highways, particularly for commercial vehicles and inter-state commuters. At the same time, planners emphasise that environmental safeguards and responsible land-use planning will remain critical if expansion proceeds. The proposal now awaits consideration at the national level. If accepted, the project could become part of a broader effort to modernise Delhi-NCR’s transport network through better regional coordination. Its long-term success, however, will depend not only on faster road movement but also on ensuring infrastructure growth aligns with sustainable urban development, public safety and the evolving mobility needs of one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions.
