Western Railway has temporarily increased passenger capacity on three train pairs operating under the Ahmedabad Division by adding extra coaches, a move aimed at easing crowding during the peak travel season and improving seat availability on high-demand routes.
The additional coaches have been introduced on the Sabarmati–Jaisalmer Intercity Express, the Sabarmati–Jaisalmer Superfast Express and the Udaipur City–Asarva Superfast Express. The temporary augmentation will remain in place through July and early August to accommodate the seasonal rise in passenger traffic. The enhanced capacity includes additional AC three-tier, sleeper and second seating coaches, depending on the route. Railway officials expect the measure to provide greater booking availability for passengers travelling between Gujarat and neighbouring states during the busy holiday and festive travel period.
The Ahmedabad railway capacity expansion reflects Indian Railways’ operational strategy of adjusting coach composition based on passenger demand rather than introducing entirely new services. Such temporary enhancements help improve utilisation of existing rolling stock while addressing congestion on popular routes. Transport planners note that increasing coach capacity is one of the quickest and most cost-effective methods of improving passenger mobility during periods of heavy demand. It reduces waiting lists, improves travel accessibility and helps optimise the use of existing railway infrastructure without requiring major timetable changes.
