Ahmedabad Rail Network Tightens Safety With AI

AHMEDABAD: Passenger security across Gujarat’s railway network is set for a technology-led push, with authorities directing Western Railway jurisdictions to expand CCTV monitoring, strengthen police deployment and use artificial intelligence-based tools to detect and investigate crime. The move comes as railway stations and trains handle growing passenger volumes, making faster reporting and coordinated surveillance increasingly important for public safety.

The directions were issued during a crime review conference in Ahmedabad, where senior railway and police officials assessed measures for preventing offences on trains and at stations. Particular attention was given to improving the e-FIR system, which allows complaints to be registered digitally and can help reduce delays in initiating investigations. Authorities have also called for wider use of surveillance infrastructure at railway premises. CCTV networks and technology-based monitoring are expected to support the identification of suspicious activity and improve the ability of security personnel to respond to incidents. Increased police presence and regular patrolling have also been emphasised, particularly to address theft and pickpocketing. The technology push extends beyond conventional surveillance. Officials have been asked to use digital intelligence and analytical platforms, including Sudarshan, Gandiv and NATGRID, as part of a broader effort to improve information sharing and crime detection.

Drug trafficking through railway routes has emerged as another major focus. Security teams have been instructed to intensify checks of passengers and luggage where suspicious activity is detected and strengthen investigations beyond individual seizures. The stated objective is to identify the wider supply networks behind narcotics movement rather than treating each incident as an isolated offence. Authorities have also called for coordinated operations against interstate trafficking groups. This is particularly relevant to railway infrastructure, where passengers, freight and trains routinely move across administrative boundaries. Effective enforcement therefore depends on information sharing between jurisdictions rather than security measures being confined to individual stations. For passengers, the value of technology will ultimately depend on how seamlessly it works alongside visible policing and responsive complaint systems. More cameras alone cannot guarantee safer journeys unless footage is actively monitored, incidents are acted upon quickly and passengers can report problems without unnecessary procedural barriers.

There is also a wider urban dimension. Railway stations are high-footfall public spaces that connect neighbourhoods, employment centres and regional markets. Making them safer can strengthen confidence in public transport and support more sustainable mobility by making rail travel a more dependable alternative to private vehicles. The next challenge will be implementation. Expanding digital surveillance while maintaining appropriate safeguards, trained personnel and reliable inter-agency coordination will determine whether the technology-led approach produces measurable improvements in passenger safety across Gujarat’s railway network.
