Delhi Shahdara GT Road Closure Puts East Traffic Under Strain
Delhi’s traffic network in the east is facing fresh pressure as movement along the Shahdara section of GT Road has been restricted for regular vehicles during the Kanwar Yatra. The closure, linked to the rising movement of Kanwariyas, is pushing traffic towards adjoining corridors and increasing delays across Anand Vihar, Seemapuri, Vivek Vihar and Shahdara. The disruption highlights how quickly a major road closure can affect an already capacity-constrained urban network.
The affected corridor runs between the Apsara Border and the Kashmere Gate side, making it an important east-west connection for commuters travelling between residential areas, commercial districts and central Delhi. With regular traffic redirected, roads including Wazirabad Road, Loni Road and Swami Dayanand Marg are also expected to experience heavier loads. The current restrictions are scheduled to remain in place through August 12, with traffic management measures changing according to the movement of pilgrims. Vehicles approaching GT Road from Anand Vihar and Seemapuri are being redirected, while traffic from Vivek Vihar and Jagatpuri towards Keshav Chowk is also being regulated. For daily commuters, the immediate issue is not simply the closure of one road but the limited capacity of neighbouring routes to absorb diverted vehicles. When a high-volume arterial road is removed from the network, even relatively short journeys can become significantly longer. This also increases fuel consumption and vehicle emissions as engines spend more time idling or moving slowly.
The pressure is particularly relevant for buses and other shared transport services serving east Delhi. Traffic diversions can increase journey times, affect route reliability and make road-based public transport less predictable. A greater shift towards the metro could help reduce pressure on surface roads, particularly for trips that do not require door-to-door access. The experience also points to a wider urban-planning challenge. Delhi’s road network needs to accommodate routine commuting alongside large temporary movements without transferring congestion from one neighbourhood to another. Better real-time traffic information, clearly separated pedestrian and vehicular movement, and coordinated diversions across Delhi and neighbouring districts can reduce the secondary impact of such events.
Traffic authorities have advised commuters to check updated route information before travelling. For residents with flexible journeys, public transport and off-peak travel may offer more reliable alternatives until the restrictions are lifted. The episode underlines the importance of building urban mobility systems with enough flexibility to handle seasonal surges, major public events and emergency restrictions without placing disproportionate pressure on local communities.
