Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s largest city, faced cloudy skies on Monday but remained dry as anticipated monsoon showers evaded most parts of the city and several districts across the state. According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), twenty districts reported minimal rainfall amounts exceeding 1mm by 8pm on Monday, with notable precipitation recorded in various regions.
The highest rainfall accumulation was observed in Babra, Amreli, recording 45mm, followed closely by Gariadhar and Bhavnagar with 29mm each. Liliya in Amreli and Kavant in Chhota Udepur received 25mm, while nine other districts in Saurashtra and South Gujarat received over 10mm of rainfall, providing relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions. Despite the sporadic showers in certain areas, Ahmedabad experienced soaring temperatures with the mercury rising to 40.6 degrees Celsius, surpassing the normal temperature by 2.4°C. The minimum temperature also remained significantly higher than usual at 30.1°C, indicating prolonged heatwave conditions affecting the region. Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts suggest that Ahmedabad is likely to witness another day of scorching temperatures around 40°C on Tuesday. However, there is optimism for some relief towards the evening or night with expectations of light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers predicted for parts of South Gujarat and coastal Saurashtra.
