Ahmedabad’s next phase of metro expansion has moved closer to implementation after the Public Investment Board cleared the proposed Phase Three project. The planned network would add around 60 km of new routes, strengthening connections across western, eastern and southern parts of the city while creating a future link towards Dholera. The development could reshape how Ahmedabad grows beyond its established urban core.
A major proposed corridor would connect Thaltej Gam with Badrabad through Godhavi. The alignment is planned to begin near Shilaj Canal Road and continue along the Sardar Patel Ring Road before reaching Badrabad near the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway. The location is significant because it could eventually become an interchange for connections towards the Dholera Special Investment Region and the planned airport. The proposal also includes a circular corridor beginning and ending at Vadaj. It would pass through several established and emerging urban areas, including Akhbarnagar, Naranpura and Amraiwadi. Interchanges at Gujarat University, APMC, Amraiwadi and Vadaj are intended to make cross-city travel easier without forcing passengers through the central business district. For Ahmedabad, the wider significance lies in how public transport can influence future development. New metro corridors can make employment, education, healthcare and commercial areas more accessible while reducing dependence on private vehicles. If planned alongside pedestrian infrastructure, cycling routes and feeder services, the expansion could support a more connected and lower-emission urban transport system.
The proposed 41 elevated stations would also bring new opportunities for transit-oriented development. Areas around stations could attract housing, offices, retail and public services. However, planners will need to manage this growth carefully to avoid congestion, unplanned construction and rising land pressures around new stations. Preparatory activities are already progressing, including design work, geotechnical investigations, utility planning and tender-related processes. These steps are intended to reduce delays before major construction begins.
The proposed connection towards Dholera adds a broader regional dimension. Better links between Ahmedabad and emerging industrial and investment zones could strengthen access to jobs and economic opportunities. At the same time, transport planning will need to remain aligned with environmental safeguards, land-use planning and the capacity of surrounding communities. The PIB clearance is an important administrative milestone, but it does not represent final project approval. Union Cabinet clearance will be required before the project can proceed into full-scale construction. For Ahmedabad, the next stage will determine whether the proposed expansion becomes a practical mobility network capable of supporting the city’s next phase of sustainable growth.
