Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad has expanded its signal-free intersection strategy to the Kargil crossroads on SG Highway, launching a pilot that aims to reduce traffic delays, fuel consumption and vehicle emissions at one of the city’s busiest junctions. The move follows the reported success of a similar traffic management model implemented earlier at the Palladium Mall intersection and reflects the city’s growing focus on smarter urban mobility solutions.
The trial replaces conventional traffic signals with a redesigned road layout centred around a raised median, commonly referred to as the capsule traffic model. Instead of waiting at signalised intersections, vehicles travelling straight continue uninterrupted, while motorists intending to make right turns are directed to proceed further before using designated U-turn points to access their desired route. Traffic authorities estimate that more than 50,000 vehicles pass through the Kargil crossroads daily, making it a strategic location to assess whether uninterrupted traffic movement can ease congestion without requiring major infrastructure expansion. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has supported the pilot by constructing new road infrastructure beneath the flyover and installing barricades to guide vehicle movement. The capsule traffic model has emerged as a low-cost traffic engineering intervention that seeks to improve intersection efficiency by eliminating signal waiting times and reducing conflict points. Urban transport specialists note that conventional signal-controlled intersections often create bottlenecks during peak hours, increasing fuel consumption, travel time and vehicular emissions through repeated stopping and acceleration.
Although drivers making right turns may travel an additional 100 to 200 metres before completing a U-turn, transport planners argue that uninterrupted vehicle movement generally offsets the extra distance. Reduced idling at intersections can also contribute to lower carbon emissions and improved air quality, particularly on high-volume urban corridors. Experts caution, however, that the effectiveness of signal-free designs depends on disciplined driving behaviour, clear lane markings and strong enforcement during the initial implementation period. Adequate public awareness campaigns and continuous traffic monitoring will be essential to ensure motorists adapt safely to the revised road layout.
The pilot also reflects a broader shift towards data-led traffic management in Indian cities. Rather than relying solely on large-scale road widening projects, municipalities are increasingly experimenting with intersection redesign, adaptive traffic systems and operational improvements that optimise existing road capacity while minimising construction-related disruption. For Ahmedabad, where rapid urban expansion continues to increase traffic volumes, improving junction efficiency has become an important component of sustainable mobility planning. Better traffic flow can reduce commuter delays, improve freight movement and lower fuel consumption, generating both economic and environmental benefits. Officials will monitor vehicle movement, congestion levels and safety outcomes during the trial before deciding whether the capsule traffic model should be introduced at additional intersections across the city. The results are expected to inform future urban transport strategies that prioritise efficient mobility alongside safer and more sustainable street design.
