Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has intensified oversight of its solid waste collection fleet by removing two garbage collection vehicle drivers from active duty following a citywide safety inspection. The action forms part of a broader effort to improve road safety standards, strengthen accountability in municipal services and reduce risks posed by civic utility vehicles operating across Ahmedabad’s busy streets.
The inspection campaign, led by the civic body’s Solid Waste Management Department, focused on the operational conduct of garbage collection vehicles deployed across all 48 municipal wards. Officials examined driver qualifications, adherence to traffic regulations, vehicle handling practices and overall compliance with prescribed safety protocols as part of routine service monitoring. Following the review, two drivers were taken off duty after authorities determined they were either unsuitable to continue operating municipal vehicles or had failed to meet expected operational standards. Civic officials also initiated action against the agencies responsible for deploying the drivers, signalling a stricter approach towards contractor accountability in essential public services. The municipal vehicle safety initiative goes beyond disciplinary measures. Alongside inspections, drivers across the waste collection network are being provided refresher training and guidance on safe driving practices, with the objective of reducing preventable road incidents while improving service reliability.
