Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad is preparing to replace the ageing Subhash Bridge with a new eight-lane crossing over the Sabarmati River, marking a significant infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving urban mobility, structural safety and long-term transport capacity. Civic authorities have initiated demolition of the existing bridge while advancing budget approvals and construction plans for its replacement.
The proposed project, estimated at ₹241 crore, envisages a modern bridge capable of accommodating rising traffic volumes across one of the city’s important east-west transport corridors. Municipal officials have proposed a 24-month construction schedule, with one carriageway expected to be completed within the first 16 months to restore partial connectivity before the full structure is commissioned. Subhash Bridge, built in 1973, had served Ahmedabad for more than five decades before being closed to traffic in December 2025 after structural defects were identified. Subsequent technical inspections found settlement in one of the bridge spans, prompting detailed assessments by engineering institutions specialising in structural safety and bridge performance. Initial plans focused on rehabilitating the bridge alongside constructing parallel river crossings to increase capacity. However, fresh inspections reportedly identified additional structural deterioration, leading civic authorities to revise their strategy in favour of complete demolition and reconstruction rather than continued restoration.
Infrastructure specialists note that ageing bridges across rapidly growing cities increasingly require comprehensive structural assessments as traffic loads and urban development intensify beyond original design assumptions. In many cases, replacement offers greater long-term value than repeated repairs by improving resilience, operational safety and future capacity while reducing maintenance costs over the asset’s lifecycle.
