After Delhi-NCR Earthquake Hits Bihar’s Siwan Tremors Felt
A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Siwan, Bihar, at 08:02 IST today, hours after a similar tremor rocked Delhi-NCR earlier in the morning. According to the National Centre of Seismology (NCS), the earthquake’s epicentre was located at 25.93° N latitude and 84.42° E longitude, with a depth of 10 km.
The earthquake in Siwan, which measured 4.0 on the Richter Scale, left local residents shaken, though there have been no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage. The tremor was felt by those in the vicinity of Siwan, but it did not appear to cause substantial harm, as the region’s emergency services have not been inundated with reports of casualties or structural damage.
Earlier, at approximately 5:38 am IST, another earthquake of the same magnitude struck Delhi-NCR. This earthquake, with its epicentre near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi, was also measured at a depth of 5 km. It caused tremors across the capital and the neighbouring cities of Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad. The tremors were so strong that residents of high-rise buildings rushed out of their homes in fear. The National Centre for Seismology posted an update on the incident, confirming that the earthquake in Delhi-NCR had a magnitude of 4.0 and occurred at 5:36 am IST. While no casualties or significant damage were reported from the region, residents of the area experienced a loud sound accompanied by the tremors, which led to heightened concern among the local population.
Both these earthquakes have drawn attention due to the proximity of their occurrence and the relatively moderate strength of the tremors. The areas affected, including Siwan in Bihar and Delhi-NCR, have not experienced major earthquakes in recent years. However, it is not uncommon for smaller, low-magnitude quakes to occur in these regions. For example, Delhi-NCR had recorded a 3.3 magnitude earthquake in 2015, which was similarly mild but still caused some alarm among residents. The tremors also raised concerns about the region’s preparedness for more severe seismic activity. Delhi-NCR, in particular, is a densely populated area, and the vulnerability of high-rise buildings to seismic activity has long been a topic of discussion. Although this morning’s earthquake did not result in any fatalities or injuries, it served as a reminder of the region’s susceptibility to such events.
The NCS has not indicated any further seismic activity in the immediate aftermath of the quakes, but authorities continue to monitor the situation. In the case of both earthquakes, the response from local officials and emergency services has been quick, with no significant structural damage being reported. Residents in Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad are urged to stay alert and adhere to safety protocols, as minor tremors are sometimes followed by aftershocks. Similarly, authorities in Bihar are on standby in case any further developments arise from the tremors that struck Siwan today. While the 4.0 magnitude earthquakes in Siwan and Delhi-NCR have caused some alarm, both regions appear to have avoided major damage. These events highlight the ongoing need for vigilance and preparedness in earthquake-prone areas.
