Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has become the world’s first independent power producer (IPP) to attain water positivity across its entire operational portfolio, which exceeds 14 gigawatts (GW).
This accomplishment not only underscores AGEL’s commitment to sustainable practices but also sets a new benchmark for the industry globally. Achieving water positivity means that AGEL’s operations contribute more to local water replenishment than they consume. This milestone was certified by Intertek, a global assurance firm, following comprehensive audits across 103 operational sites and 85 water conservation initiatives. Notably, AGEL is the only renewable energy company in India of this scale to receive such certification.
The company’s water conservation efforts are particularly significant given the challenging terrains of its operational sites, including the arid regions of Khavda in Gujarat and the Thar Desert. Through innovative solutions like robotic cleaning technology for solar panels, AGEL has managed to reduce freshwater consumption substantially. Currently, over 54% of AGEL’s operational capacity employs robotic cleaning, saving approximately 546 million litres of water annually. Beyond technological innovations, AGEL has engaged in community-focused water conservation projects. The company has revitalised 85 ponds, benefiting over 123,000 individuals in water-scarce communities. These initiatives align with AGEL’s broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, which include achieving net water positivity, eliminating single-use plastics, and maintaining zero waste-to-landfill operations.
This achievement is particularly timely, as India faces significant water scarcity challenges. By 2025, the country is projected to experience severe water stress, with per capita availability falling below the threshold defined by the United Nations. AGEL’s proactive approach serves as a model for integrating renewable energy development with responsible water stewardship. AGEL’s journey towards water positivity began with a commitment to make over 200 MW of its operational plants water positive by FY2023. Surpassing this target, the company has now achieved water positivity across its entire operational portfolio a year ahead of its FY2026 goal. This accomplishment reflects AGEL’s dedication to not only generating clean energy but also ensuring that its operations contribute positively to the environment and communities.
As the world grapples with the dual challenges of climate change and water scarcity, AGEL’s achievement highlights the potential for renewable energy companies to play a pivotal role in sustainable water management. By adopting innovative technologies and engaging with local communities, AGEL demonstrates that it is possible to meet the growing energy demands while preserving vital water resources for future generations.
