Patna Kolkata Trains Diverted After Jamui Goods Train Derailment Causing Major Delays
A goods train derailment near Jamui in Bihar has disrupted passenger rail services, forcing multiple Kolkata-bound trains to be diverted. The incident, which occurred late Saturday night, prompted authorities to block both up and down lines between Jasidih and Jhajha, affecting high-profile services such as the Patna–Howrah Vande Bharat Express and Patna–Howrah Janshatabdi Express. Passengers across Bihar experienced delays, route changes, and extended travel times, highlighting vulnerabilities in one of India’s busiest rail corridors.
Railway officials confirmed that the Vande Bharat Express was rerouted via the Gaya–Dhanbad–Pradhankhunta line, while the Janshatabdi Express operated along the Kiul–Bhagalpur–Banka–Jasidih corridor. Several other long-distance trains passing through Patna were similarly diverted, resulting in schedule disruptions. The Vande Bharat Express, originally scheduled to depart Patna at 8:00 am, left at 9:52 am due to foggy weather and reached Howrah nearly two hours late. The Janshatabdi Express experienced comparable delays. An official from Danapur railway division described the Jhajha–Jasidih section as a critical link on the Delhi–Patna–Howrah mainline, handling significant passenger and freight volumes daily. “Restoration work is ongoing, and passengers are advised to monitor updates closely. Diversions are unavoidable until the tracks are fully operational,” the official said.
Urban transport analysts note that such incidents expose both operational and logistical challenges in densely trafficked rail networks. While rerouting preserves service continuity, the extended travel times and alternative corridors increase fuel consumption, staff requirements, and operational costs, underscoring the need for resilient infrastructure planning. Experts also highlight that integrating real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance systems can help mitigate the impact of accidents and reduce passenger inconvenience. The derailment comes amid a peak travel period, amplifying disruption for daily commuters, long-distance travellers, and freight operators. Industry observers emphasise that diversions, partial cancellations, and rescheduling can have ripple effects on urban economies reliant on timely logistics and mobility. Meanwhile, passengers are encouraged to plan ahead, stay informed via official railway advisories, and allow additional time for journeys.
As restoration efforts continue, the incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of network resilience and proactive maintenance. For growing urban centres and intercity corridors, ensuring uninterrupted rail services is key to maintaining sustainable mobility, reducing congestion, and supporting equitable access to essential services.
