NMMC Expands Daily Dust Control Operations Across Roads To Reduce Pollution Levels

Navi Mumbai is stepping up its efforts to combat urban pollution with a citywide road deep-cleaning initiative, conducted daily across key divisions including Sanpada, Digha, Ghansoli, and Airoli. The programme, led by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), aims to improve air quality and curb dust-related hazards, even continuing operations on public holidays to ensure sustained impact.

In Sanpada, sanitation teams focused on the bustling Sector 4 daily market and Chemist Bhavan road in Sector 3, using brush brooms, mechanised flippers, and silt removal operations to thoroughly cleanse the streets. Digha saw similar meticulous cleaning along the stretch from Ishwarnagar Mukund Chowk to Shankar Mandir, ensuring that high-footfall areas remain dust-free and safe for residents. Ghansoli and Airoli divisions have deployed targeted dust control measures to tackle airborne particulate matter. In Ghansoli, the Rabale MIDC area underwent debris removal, road washing with treated water, and mist-like water spraying using ENCAP’s advanced vehicle system. Streets in Katkari Pada and Ganpatinagar also received deep-cleaning attention. Meanwhile, in Airoli, the sector 17 corridor from Abhyudaya Bank to the local mosque was cleaned comprehensively on both sides to reduce dust accumulation and improve public health conditions.

The drive is overseen directly by Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, with guidance from Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar, City Engineer Shirish Ardawad, and Solid Waste Management Deputy Commissioner Dr Ajay Gadade. Division-level assistant commissioners ensure adherence to daily operations and monitor efficiency. “Controlling dust on roads is a key step towards enhancing air quality. Sustained, methodical cleaning will have long-term benefits for residents,” said Dr Shinde. Urban experts note that systematic cleaning and dust suppression in rapidly urbanising areas is critical for both public health and the city’s sustainability goals. Roads lined with construction debris, untreated waste, and high vehicular traffic contribute significantly to particulate matter, exacerbating respiratory issues and reducing overall environmental quality. Initiatives like NMMC’s daily deep-cleaning and use of treated water for dust control exemplify practical measures to achieve a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable cityscape.

The NMMC’s intensified focus on road cleanliness also supports broader zero-carbon and equitable urban strategies, ensuring that all residents, especially those in high-density zones, benefit from improved air quality and safe public spaces. By combining technology, manpower, and citizen awareness, Navi Mumbai is positioning itself as a model for proactive urban environmental management in India.
