The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has announced a full-day suspension of water supply on 26 November as part of a planned upgrade of critical pipeline infrastructure across the city. The shutdown, scheduled from 9 a.m. on Wednesday to 9 a.m. on Thursday, aims to integrate newly installed transmission pipes that will eventually strengthen the water network for several residential clusters. The upgrade is expected to improve long-term reliability but poses immediate inconvenience for thousands of households.
According to officials, the shutdown is necessary to connect a recently laid 1,168-mm diameter pipeline feeding the Indiranagar reservoir. The new line, developed under the Wagle Ward Committee and Lokmanya Savarkar Nagar Ward Committee, requires the installation of a valve on an existing 750-mm pipe at Indiranagar Naka. Engineers involved in the project noted that such integrations are technically complex and cannot be executed without halting supply to the connected zones. The affected areas include major reservoirs such as Indiranagar, Srinagar, Warlipada, Kailasnagar, Rupadevi, Ramnagar and Yeur Air Force. Water flow from these Jalkumbhs will remain fully suspended for the scheduled period, with the corporation cautioning that pressure may remain low for one to two days following restoration. Officials have advised residents to store water responsibly and adopt careful usage practices during the outage.
Urban planners and infrastructure specialists observe that Thane’s expanding population and rapid real estate growth continue to place stress on ageing water systems. They believe targeted upgrades like this are essential for improving equitable distribution and reducing losses. However, they emphasise that communication and phased planning need to be strengthened to minimise disruption, especially for vulnerable groups who may struggle during extended water cuts. The TMC issued a public advisory urging citizens to avoid wastage, with additional appeals highlighting the importance of using stored water judiciously. This announcement follows a similar repair initiative undertaken recently in parts of Mumbai, where the civic body advised residents to boil and filter water for several days after maintenance work at the Pali Hill reservoir.
