Mumbai Metro Line 5 Contract Awarded To Titagarh Rail For 132 Coaches

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has awarded the rolling stock contract for Mumbai Metro Line 5 to Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, marking a major milestone in the expansion of sustainable public transport across the metropolitan region. The ₹2,475 crore ($297 million) project covers the Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan corridor, featuring 15 stations along a 24.9-kilometre alignment designed to decongest one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban belts.

The Letter of Acceptance, issued on 10 November 2025, follows a comprehensive technical and financial evaluation conducted by MMRDA. Only two firms were shortlisted from the initial three bidders. According to senior officials, the contract’s award reflects the government’s emphasis on domestic innovation and the “Make in India” initiative, given Titagarh Rail’s proven manufacturing capability and export presence. The contract scope includes the design, manufacture, testing, and commissioning of 132 metro coaches equipped with advanced communication-based train control systems, platform screen doors, depot machinery, and telecommunication networks. The metro cars will also feature energy-efficient propulsion technology aimed at reducing power consumption and emissions.

Officials said the delivery timeline has been structured in phases to align with construction progress. A prototype train will be supplied within 56 weeks, followed by additional trainsets over subsequent phases. The first phase, from Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka, will see the introduction of 12 trainsets, while Phase 2, extending to Kalyan APMC via Bhiwandi, will add ten more. Under the contract, Titagarh Rail will maintain the trainsets for five years following a two-year defect liability period. This integrated supply-and-maintenance model ensures reliability and performance across the network’s early years of operation. “The introduction of energy-efficient rolling stock will enhance commuter safety and comfort while lowering lifecycle costs,” said a senior official familiar with the project.

Urban transport experts note that the Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan corridor is crucial for regional mobility, linking key residential and industrial zones. The metro line is expected to cut travel time by nearly half and shift thousands of daily commuters from private vehicles to public transit — a move that will improve air quality and ease road congestion. The project also reflects India’s growing confidence in local manufacturing for large-scale infrastructure projects. Titagarh Rail’s expanding international footprint in Europe and Asia further underscores its capability to deliver globally competitive rolling stock solutions.

Once operational, Mumbai Metro Line 5 is set to transform urban mobility in the extended suburbs, supporting India’s broader push for cleaner, inclusive, and sustainable public transport systems.
