Mumbai Iconic Nehru Science Centre Marks 40th Anniversary Celebration Tomorrow

The Nehru Science Centre in Worli, a landmark of Mumbai’s cultural and scientific landscape, will celebrate its 40th anniversary on November 11. Established in 1985, the Centre continues to stand as a symbol of accessible science education, public learning, and inclusive urban culture that integrates curiosity with civic engagement.

Built on what was once a derelict dumping ground, the Nehru Science Centre transformed a neglected corner of the city into a thriving green precinct. Its open-air science park introduced generations of citizens—especially students—to hands-on learning and discovery. Officials note that this approach was revolutionary for its time, shifting from static “look but don’t touch” museum displays to an interactive, experiential form of education. “The Centre helped redefine how people engage with science. It brought principles of mechanics, energy, and optics to life through direct interaction,” said a senior official. The institution’s success later inspired similar science centres across India, including in Nagpur, Patna, and Lucknow, shaping the national network of informal science learning spaces.

The Centre’s inauguration by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi marked a turning point for science communication in India. According to officials, Gandhi’s visit led to a substantial increase in funding for science museums under the National Council of Science Museums, reinforcing the Centre’s role as a policy influencer as well as a public space for learning. Over four decades, the Nehru Science Centre has expanded its focus from classical science exhibits to modern frontiers, such as nuclear energy, prehistoric life, and digital technology. The addition of the IMAX theatre and the “Science Odyssey” gallery introduced immersive visual storytelling to complement traditional exhibits, drawing thousands of students every month.

Experts in urban cultural policy describe the Centre as a vital component of Mumbai’s “learning infrastructure” — a civic resource that promotes scientific temper, creativity, and sustainability awareness. The centre’s green campus, interactive workshops, and partnerships with schools make it a model for integrating science learning into urban ecosystems. In an era of rapid technological change, the institution’s relevance lies in its commitment to democratising science — making complex ideas accessible to all. As Mumbai continues to evolve as a city of innovation, the Nehru Science Centre’s legacy serves as a reminder that inclusive education and scientific curiosity are central to building sustainable, equitable cities.

With its 40th anniversary, the Centre not only celebrates its history but renews its mission — to inspire, engage, and create the next generation of problem-solvers who will shape India’s urban future.
