Kolkata AC Trains Announced To Ease Durga Puja Festive Rush

Kolkata is set to welcome thousands of additional passengers this Durga Puja with the launch of special air-conditioned trains on key suburban routes, easing the seasonal travel rush and offering a safer, more sustainable commuting option.

Indian Railways has confirmed that these festive trains will run on the Sealdah–Bongaon and Sealdah–Krishnanagar routes, two of the busiest suburban corridors. The services are designed to absorb the annual spike in passenger demand during Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhath, reducing pressure on overcrowded regular services. Officials explained that these trains are part of a broader effort to improve mobility in metropolitan regions during high-demand periods while maintaining affordability.

The Sealdah–Bongaon train will extend to Ranaghat and cover stations including Bidhannagar, Dumdum, Madhyamgram, Barasat, and Thakurnagar, catering to commuters from both urban and semi-urban clusters. The Sealdah–Krishnanagar train will stop at multiple junctions such as Belgharia, Sodepur, Shyamnagar, Naihati, Kanchrapara, and Kalyani, ensuring extensive coverage across the suburban belt. With the addition of these trains, passengers are expected to benefit from reduced congestion, faster turnaround, and enhanced comfort.

Each rake will have 12 coaches, collectively accommodating more than 1,100 passengers. The modern design includes electrically operated sliding doors and CCTV cameras, aimed at improving both safety and efficiency. Two coaches will be reserved exclusively for women, ensuring comfort and security for female passengers during the festive rush. Railway officials have also assured commuters that ticket fares will remain affordable, reinforcing the government’s commitment to inclusive access.

Beyond convenience, the initiative speaks to the urgent need for sustainable transport during mass festivals. With thousands of private vehicles typically flooding Kolkata’s roads during Durga Puja, officials believe shifting passengers to efficient public rail could significantly reduce carbon emissions and urban congestion. Transport experts point out that rail-based solutions not only lower pollution levels but also align with India’s broader goal of building net zero, equitable cities.

For residents and visitors alike, the festive trains represent more than just a new service they symbolise a cultural lifeline. Durga Puja is Kolkata’s most significant celebration, drawing millions from across the country. By prioritising safety, affordability and accessibility, the railways are attempting to ensure that the spirit of the festival is not overshadowed by travel chaos. While some logistical challenges remain, including managing station crowds and ensuring smooth operations, the introduction of these services highlights the railways’ growing responsiveness to urban travel needs. For Kolkata, where the Puja season transforms every street into a cultural stage, efficient transport is as vital as the celebrations themselves.
