Gaur Chowk Underpass Trial Begins, Easing Greater Noida West Traffic

The Gaur Chowk underpass in Greater Noida West will undergo a three-day vehicle trial from 5 November as the Greater Noida Authority tests the infrastructure before deciding when to open it permanently. The trial is intended to assess traffic movement and identify any shortcomings in safety, signage, lighting, drainage and traffic management.

The underpass is being tested ahead of its proposed opening for public use during the festive period. The Greater Noida Authority has not announced a fixed date for permanent commissioning. Officials will first review the trial and complete any work required before the facility is formally opened.

Gaur Chowk has remained a major congestion point in Greater Noida West because it handles traffic from several busy routes. Vehicles travelling between Four Murti roundabout, Kisan Chowk, Ek Murti roundabout and Noida converge in the area, creating heavy pressure during morning and evening peak hours.

According to the authority, the underpass is expected to provide a more direct route for vehicles travelling between Noida and Greater Noida. Residents of housing societies in and around Greater Noida West have faced extended delays at the junction, particularly during peak commuting periods. The authority said the facility could benefit more than 200,000 people living in Gaur City and nearby residential areas once it becomes operational.

The main construction work has been completed, while finishing work is continuing, Greater Noida Authority Chief Executive Officer N G Ravi said, according to the report. The trial will allow officials to examine how vehicles move through the underpass and whether the supporting systems work as required before regular operations begin.

The facility is approximately 700 metres long and is being finished with painted walls featuring colourful artwork. The reported designs include depictions of Gautama Buddha and natural scenes. The authority has spent around ₹100 crore on construction at Gaur Chowk, according to the report.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is expected to visit the district on 12 November, and the report said he may inaugurate the underpass during that visit. The proposed inauguration remains subject to the completion of the trial, correction of any identified deficiencies and the authority’s decision on permanent opening.
