RG Kar Corruption Probe: Sandip Ghosh Seeks 15-Day ED Extension

Former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh skipped an Enforcement Directorate summons on Wednesday in the alleged corruption case involving the state-run Kolkata hospital and sought a 15-day extension on medical grounds, according to a report by Telegraph India.

Ghosh’s lawyers appeared before ED officials and informed them that he was unwell and unable to attend the questioning. They requested that the agency grant him additional time and allow him to be questioned through video conferencing. The ED had not responded to the request by Wednesday evening, the report said.

The summons formed part of the ED’s investigation into an alleged money trail connected to financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The agency’s probe is running alongside a Central Bureau of Investigation investigation into alleged misconduct during Ghosh’s tenure as principal.

Ghosh served as the principal of RG Kar from February 2021 to September 2023. He was transferred in October that year but returned to the post within a month and remained in the position until August 2024, when a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee was found raped and murdered at the hospital. The incident triggered nationwide protests and intensified scrutiny of the hospital’s administration and institutional safeguards.

The CBI arrested Ghosh in September 2024 after questioning him for 15 days in connection with alleged financial irregularities. The agency later accused him of offences including criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and criminal breach of trust. The allegations included irregularities in the award of hospital contracts, favouring selected vendors and manipulating recruitment processes.

Ghosh was also arrested in a separate case related to the rape and murder of the doctor. In that case, allegations were raised that he had attempted to mislead investigators and tamper with evidence. He was granted bail in December 2024 after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet.

He remained in judicial custody in the financial irregularities case until the Supreme Court granted him bail in October 2026. The latest ED summons concerns the agency’s examination of the alleged financial trail arising from the irregularities under investigation. The next step will depend on the ED’s response to Ghosh’s request for an extension and video-conference questioning.
