Pune Metro Line 3, connecting Man-Hinjewadi with Shivajinagar, was inaugurated through a video conference by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while the foundation stone for routes planned under the network’s second phase was also laid, according to Lokmat – Pune.
The inauguration brought together two strands of Pune’s urban development agenda: the expansion of mass public transport and the government’s wider focus on urban development and economic inclusion. The reported event did not include details on passenger operations, fares or the date on which regular services on the newly inaugurated corridor will begin.
During the programme, Modi also addressed the condition of drought-affected farmers in Maharashtra. He said the Centre stood firmly with farmers facing a difficult period and appealed to them not to worry. He said the National Democratic Alliance government would assist farmers sensitively and urged citizens to ensure that drought-affected families could participate in the Diwali celebrations.
Modi referred to the Maharashtra government’s drought-related assistance and said that funds under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi had also been deposited. He said the Centre was committed to helping farmers and asked people not to forget the difficulties faced by residents, farmers and rural communities affected by drought.
The Prime Minister also spoke about poverty reduction and described improving the living standards of poorer households as an important part of economic development. He said that the reduction of poverty would contribute to taking the economy to a new level. His remarks connected the metro inauguration with a broader government narrative around urban development, poverty alleviation and the delivery of benefits to intended recipients.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said assistance to farmers would continue and described the reported payment of Rs 5,000 as only the beginning of government support. He argued that people living in large houses and travelling in expensive vehicles could not understand the importance of such an amount to affected households. He also criticised those who, he said, had previously failed to provide meaningful assistance to farmers.
For Pune, the immediate infrastructure significance of the event is the formal advancement of the Man-Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar corridor and the next phase of metro planning. The available report does not provide the route length, station count, construction schedule, project cost or expected ridership. Those details will be important for assessing how the corridor will change daily travel between the western employment and residential areas and central Pune.
The next operational milestones, including construction progress, service commencement and details of the second-phase routes, will determine how quickly the inauguration translates into additional metro capacity for the city.
