Vegetation clearing has begun along a three-kilometre stretch of the Periyar Valley canal bund road in Kothamangalam after overgrown grass and undergrowth obstructed drivers’ visibility and raised concerns about accidents.
The clearing work is being carried out between Chengara and Chemmeen Kuthu along the main canal bund road. According to Mathrubhumi’s report, the action followed a report published by the newspaper on Monday highlighting the danger posed by vegetation growing on both sides of the road.
The road is already damaged in several places, while the dense growth along its edges had made it difficult for motorists to see approaching vehicles. The combination of poor road conditions and restricted visibility had repeatedly created a threat to road users, the report said.
The work began two days ago and is scheduled as part of wider preparations for reopening the canal. A meeting attended by elected representatives and officials last month had decided that vegetation clearing would begin on October 15. The report does not specify the agency carrying out the current work.
An allocation of Rs 7.5 crore has been made for canal repairs, cleaning and vegetation clearing. These works are expected to be completed before the canal is opened on December 1.
The intervention highlights how maintenance along canal corridors can affect both water infrastructure and local road safety. In this case, the bund road serves as a transport route while also forming part of the canal system, making visibility, surface condition and maintenance schedules relevant to residents and motorists using the stretch.
The ongoing clearing is the first reported action on the affected stretch following the safety concerns. Further canal repairs, cleaning and related works are due to be completed before the planned December 1 reopening.
