Champannur Railway Overbridge Stalls as Kerala Funding Awaits

The proposed Champannur railway overbridge near Angamaly railway station remains held up as the Kerala government has yet to provide financial approval and support for acquiring land needed for the approach roads, according to a report by Mathrubhumi. Preliminary work by Southern Railway has progressed, but construction cannot begin until the remaining state-level clearances are secured.

Southern Railway has completed preliminary soil testing for the overbridge, while its General Arrangement Drawing, the technical design document for the structure, has been submitted for railway approval. Once the drawing is approved, the state government can begin acquiring land for the approach roads on either side of the bridge.

The project can then move towards the tendering stage. Financial assistance from the state government would allow the subsequent procedures to be accelerated, the report said. Although a token amount had earlier been earmarked in the state budget, approval has not been granted for the full amount required for construction.

The proposed bridge is intended to address persistent congestion and safety risks at the Champannur railway gate, located close to Angamaly railway station. The gate is a key access route for nearly 200 commercial and industrial establishments in the Champannur industrial area. It also serves freight movement to facilities including Food Corporation of India warehouses and the Kerala State Bamboo Corporation.

Traffic disruption becomes particularly severe when trains are stopped at the station and the gate remains closed. Residents have also raised concerns about pedestrians attempting to pass underneath the closed gate, exposing themselves to danger. A recent incident in which a pedestrian was killed after being hit by a train has added urgency to the demand for a safer grade-separated crossing, Mathrubhumi reported.

The repeated closure of the gate affects more than routine commuting. Residents have said that the route can become inaccessible during emergencies, including situations in which patients cannot be taken to hospital on time. For people living near the crossing and for businesses dependent on regular freight movement, the gate functions as a bottleneck connecting the industrial area with the wider road network.

The demand for an overbridge has continued for several years. The project’s next steps depend on approval of the railway design, allocation of the required construction funds in the state budget and the start of land acquisition for the approach roads. Only after those processes are completed can tendering and construction proceed.
