The proposed Champannoor railway overbridge near Angamaly railway station remains stalled at the approval and land-acquisition stage, with state government financial support and assistance for acquiring land for approach roads still pending.
The project was conceived to address persistent traffic congestion and accident risks at the Champannoor railway gate. Preliminary soil testing for the overbridge has been completed under the leadership of Southern Railway, while the General Arrangement Drawing, the technical design for the structure, has been submitted for railway approval.
Once the drawing receives approval, the state government can begin acquiring the land required for approach roads on both sides of the proposed bridge. Tendering can follow after the land-acquisition process and other preliminary clearances are completed.
The project is expected to move faster if the state government provides the required financial assistance. A token allocation had reportedly been made for the project in an earlier budget, but approval for the full amount needed for construction has not yet been granted.
The railway gate is a key access route for the Champannoor industrial area, which has around 200 commercial and industrial establishments. Gate closures also affect the movement of goods to facilities including Food Corporation of India warehouses and the Kerala State Bamboo Corporation.
Traffic disruption becomes more severe when trains are halted at the nearby station and the gate remains closed. Pedestrians also face accident risks when they attempt to pass underneath the closed gate. A recent incident in which a pedestrian was hit and killed by a train has added urgency to the long-standing demand for an overbridge.
For residents, the repeated closure of the gate cuts off an important local transport route. The disruption has also affected emergency travel, with patients at times reportedly unable to reach hospitals on time.
The proposed structure is therefore linked not only to daily traffic movement but also to industrial access, freight operations and public safety. However, construction cannot begin until the railway approves the technical drawing, the state supports land acquisition and the required construction funding is sanctioned.
The next state budget is expected to be a key milestone for the project. Allocation of the required funds, followed by the start of land-acquisition procedures, would allow the authorities to proceed towards tendering and construction.
