Delhi Traffic Advisory Flags New Vikas Marg Closure Amid Festive Jams

Delhi faced severe traffic congestion across several major corridors during Tuesday evening’s festive shopping rush, with vehicles crawling or remaining stuck for hours, while the Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory for a planned march that will affect Vikas Marg on 4 November.

According to the report by Live Hindustan – NCR, congestion was reported on the Ring Road stretch between Bhikaji Cama Place and the Indraprastha flyover near ITO, the Barapullah elevated corridor, the Delhi-Noida-Direct flyway, the Outer Ring Road between Vasant Vihar and Sukhdev Vihar, and National Highway-48 through Mahipalpur. Traffic was also affected on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, the NH-9 corridor and Vikas Marg, which connects central and east Delhi through Laxmi Nagar.

The report attributed the disruption to the festive shopping rush, peak-hour traffic, illegal parking and vehicle breakdowns. Several commuters reportedly took two to three times longer than usual to reach their destinations. Congestion was particularly heavy around Sarai Kale Khan, Ring Road, Barapullah Road and the DND corridor. The area has recently emerged as a major traffic hotspot, with worsening conditions also reported after the opening of the Barapullah Phase-3 flyover on 30 September.

Commuters shared updates on social media and sought assistance from the Delhi Traffic Police and other authorities. Some reported that ambulances were also caught in the congestion, including a post claiming that three ambulances were stuck near Barapullah Road close to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The report also carried complaints that traffic personnel were not visible at some affected locations.

In response to one congestion report, the traffic police said that a car breakdown had caused the jam on Barapullah. A commuter posting on X said traffic had remained stationary on Barapullah for 50 minutes. Heavy congestion was also reported around CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, Lala Lajpat Rai Road, Mathura Road between Neela Gumbad in Nizamuddin and the Badarpur border, and NH-48, where vehicles were described as being tightly packed.

The new advisory concerns a proposed march from Karkardooma Mor to Nirman Vihar Metro Station on 4 November. Traffic on Vikas Marg towards Nirman Vihar Metro Station is expected to be affected between 3pm and 5.30pm. During the march, vehicle movement on the road from Karkardooma Mor to Nirman Vihar Metro Station will remain closed, according to the advisory reported by Live Hindustan – NCR.

Traffic approaching Karkardooma Mor will be diverted towards alternative routes. Travellers heading towards ITO have been advised to use Master Plan Road and Pusta Road. The restriction is scheduled to remain in force during the march window, with the advisory intended to guide traffic movement through the affected stretch.
