Pune traffic police have restricted heavy vehicles and passenger buses on the Chandni Chowk–Kothrud Depot stretch as construction begins on the next phase of the Pune Metro’s Vanaz–Chandni Chowk extension. Affected vehicles have been directed to use an alternative route through Dukkar Khind, Warje and Karvenagar.
The restriction applies to dumpers, concrete mixers, goods-carrying vehicles, state transport buses and private passenger buses travelling from Chandni Chowk towards Kothrud Depot. The traffic police have asked operators to avoid the affected road and follow the diversion to manage vehicle movement while Metro-related work progresses.
The construction activity includes installing metal barricades along both sides of the road divider between Vanaz Metro station and Chandni Chowk. The barricades are intended to create a controlled work zone and support construction along the corridor, while also regulating traffic on the busy road connecting Chandni Chowk with Kothrud.
A separate height barrier is also planned near Prathamesh Elite Society on the road leading from Chandni Chowk towards Kothrud Depot. According to the traffic advisory reported by Pune Mirror, the road has a steep downward slope, and the barrier is intended to prevent heavy vehicles from entering the stretch.
Vehicles affected by the restriction should travel from Chandni Chowk through Dukkar Khind, Warje, Karvenagar, Karve Road and Paud Phata Chowk before continuing towards their destinations. The diversion is longer than the direct Chandni Chowk–Kothrud Depot route and is expected to alter movement patterns for commercial vehicles and bus operators using the corridor.
The restrictions come as work advances on the Vanaz–Chandni Chowk stretch of Pune Metro. For commuters, the immediate impact will be a changed road environment, with barricades and construction activity requiring drivers to follow traffic instructions and plan journeys in advance. Bus operators and goods-vehicle drivers using the route will need to account for the diversion while the work zone is in place.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr Sandeep Bhajibhakre has appealed to drivers to comply with the diversion and avoid the restricted road. The traffic police have advised motorists and bus operators to follow the designated alternative route to minimise inconvenience and congestion during the construction period.
