Varanasi Medical College Gets Push as UP Orders Faster Construction

Construction of the Varanasi medical college is set to receive closer administrative monitoring after Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak directed officials to expedite the project and complete it within its stipulated timeline. The instruction was issued during a review of healthcare and medical education services across Varanasi division on Wednesday.

Pathak also ordered officials to maintain construction quality and prevent avoidable delays in ongoing health infrastructure projects. “Unnecessary delays in development and construction works should not be allowed, and there will be no compromise on quality,” he said, according to the report.

The review covered Varanasi, Chandauli, Ghazipur and Jaunpur, bringing divisional and district-level health administration into the monitoring process. Officials examined the progress of healthcare facilities, departmental schemes, construction projects and the availability of medical services across the four districts.

The directive places the Varanasi medical college project within a wider review of public health infrastructure rather than treating it as an isolated construction assignment. Pathak instructed officials to monitor the project regularly, track ongoing works against set targets and ensure that implementation remains aligned with approved timelines.

The meeting also focused on government hospitals and the quality of services available to patients. Pathak asked officials to improve arrangements at hospitals across the four districts and to conduct regular assessments of medical facilities, essential resources and services being delivered to patients.

The review reflects the administrative challenge of expanding healthcare capacity through both physical construction and operational improvements. A medical college requires timely completion of its built infrastructure, while district hospitals and other facilities must continue to provide services and maintain access to essential resources during the expansion of the health system.

Pathak said accessible and quality healthcare was a priority for the state government. He directed officials to ensure effective implementation of departmental schemes and improve healthcare delivery, while warning that negligence in efforts to strengthen medical services and patient care would not be tolerated.

He further called for accountability, transparency and regular follow-up from officials responsible for the projects and healthcare programmes. Additional director of health for Varanasi division Dr Digvijay Singh, chief medical officers, chief medical superintendents and other officials attended the review meeting. The next stated administrative step is continued monitoring of the medical college construction and other health projects against their set targets and timelines.
