Cyclone Arnab Puts Bokaro on High Alert as Heavy Rain Nears

Bokaro district administration stepped up emergency preparedness on Wednesday after Cyclone Arnab made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rain in Jharkhand on Wednesday and very heavy rain on Thursday.

Deputy commissioner Ajay Nath Jha directed all departments to remain on alert and keep critical resources ready for emergency response. The preparations cover manpower, vehicles, medicines and other essential supplies across the district.

“We are closely monitoring the weather situation and have directed all departments to remain in preparedness mode. Adequate manpower, vehicles, medicines and other essential resources should be kept ready so that any emergency can be dealt with promptly,” Jha said.

Police authorities have been instructed to keep personnel and vehicles ready for emergency operations. The health department has been asked to ensure the availability of life-saving medicines, ambulances, doctors and paramedical staff in case weather-related incidents require medical assistance.

Urban services have also been placed under review. Chas Municipal Corporation and Phusro Municipal Council have been directed to clear drains and strengthen measures to prevent waterlogging. The civic bodies have also been instructed to sprinkle bleaching powder wherever required. Bokaro Steel Plant has been asked to improve drainage and sanitation arrangements in the areas under its management.

The district administration has directed block development officers and circle officers to visit vulnerable locations, monitor local conditions and facilitate relief measures if necessary. The electricity and drinking water departments have been asked to maintain essential supplies during the period of adverse weather.

The IMD forecast cited in the report includes thunderstorms and lightning along with the expected rainfall. The administration’s instructions place responsibility across district departments, municipal bodies, the steel plant and field-level officials rather than limiting preparedness to weather monitoring alone.

Officials are expected to continue monitoring vulnerable locations and maintain emergency resources as the forecast period progresses. The administration’s immediate focus is on drainage, essential services, medical readiness and response capacity in the event of heavy rain, waterlogging or other weather-related emergencies.
