Assam Illicit Liquor Crackdown Gets 73-Officer Push

Assam has launched a 30-day residential training programme for 73 excise enforcement officers to strengthen operations against illicit liquor networks, improve investigations and address tax evasion, according to the Times of India report.

The programme was inaugurated on Monday at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon by Assam excise commissioner and secretary Virendra Mittal. The training is designed to improve officers’ field readiness and enforcement capabilities during raids and investigations.

The month-long residential curriculum includes physical endurance, modern investigation methods, raid management and legal compliance. The programme also aims to strengthen officers’ technical and legal skills as they work against illegal liquor networks.

Mittal told officers that discipline, technical precision and commitment to public service would be important during enforcement operations. The focus on operational procedures indicates that the department is seeking to build a more consistent enforcement framework rather than relying only on individual raids.

Senior excise officer Sailendra Pandey said the training would improve officers’ field capabilities and equip them with enhanced legal and technological skills. The programme is also intended to support action against illicit liquor trade and related revenue losses.

The training comes as Assam’s excise enforcement machinery seeks to improve its ability to detect, investigate and act against illegal liquor operations. The department has not disclosed in the supplied report the number of cases targeted, the expected number of raids or a separate implementation timeline after the 30-day programme concludes.

The residential training programme will continue for one month at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy, with officers expected to undergo instruction in enforcement operations, investigation techniques and legal procedures.
