Vishrantwadi Flyover Nears Finish, Pune Traffic Relief Set for 2027

Pune’s Vishrantwadi flyover and grade separator have reached 85% completion, with the Pune Municipal Corporation planning to open both structures to traffic in January 2027 after completing the remaining work, according to the civic body’s Special Projects Department.

The project is being built at Mukundrao Ambedkar Chowk, a key junction connecting Airport Road with Alandi Road, Dhanori and Lohegaon. The junction experiences heavy vehicle movement, particularly during peak hours, resulting in congestion for airport-bound motorists, office-goers, students and other commuters.

The municipal corporation expects the flyover and grade separator to separate traffic movements through the junction once they are opened. The remaining work is expected to be completed over the next two months, the report said.

Dinkar Gojare, head of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Special Projects Department, said the work had been delayed because of several obstacles at the site. He said those difficulties had now been addressed and that the remaining construction had been accelerated.

The project encountered a dense network of existing utilities and other structures. These included buildings, water pipelines, infrastructure belonging to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company, 14 electricity lines carrying 18 kilovolts and a network of gas pipelines. Relocating these services contributed to delays in construction.

Land required for the grade separator was also located near a religious structure in the junction area. The civic administration had been coordinating with the concerned parties to obtain the required space, according to the report.

The planned flyover will be 650 metres long and seven metres wide. The grade separator, described as a Y-shaped structure, will extend for 666 metres and have a width of nine metres. The reported cost of the project is Rs 51 crore.

The junction’s importance is linked to its role in distributing traffic towards Pune airport and the city’s northern areas. At present, vehicles using the routes towards the airport, Alandi, Dhanori and Lohegaon converge at the same busy intersection, increasing delays during periods of high demand.

The project’s progress also highlights the construction challenges involved in upgrading an operating urban junction. Utility relocation, access to land and coordination with existing structures can affect timelines even when the physical construction is concentrated within a single corridor. In Vishrantwadi, these issues required work to proceed alongside coordination with multiple agencies and stakeholders.

The municipal corporation’s stated plan is to complete the remaining work and open the flyover and grade separator to traffic in January 2027. The final opening will depend on completion of construction and the civic body’s arrangements for putting the structures into operation.
