Ahmedabad Riverfront police have arrested a man accused of posing as a police officer, threatening a young couple with the alleged publication of their photographs and forcing them to transfer ₹10,000 through digital payments, according to a report by Divya Bhaskar.
The incident reportedly took place at about 4am on 24 May at a walkway behind the airport area along the Sabarmati Riverfront. A 23-year-old man had gone for a walk with a female friend and was sitting at the location when the accused approached them.
According to the complaint, the man claimed to be a police officer and told the couple that he had taken their photographs on his mobile phone. He allegedly threatened to file a complaint against them and circulate the images to their families and on social media. He also allegedly took their mobile phones, abused them and demanded money in exchange for not sharing the photographs.
The complainant reportedly had only ₹4,000 in his bank account. He then contacted a friend and arranged for the remaining ₹6,000 to be transferred to his account through Google Pay. The accused allegedly used his own phone to have the complainant scan a QR code. The name displayed after the scan was Syed Noor Mir, according to the report.
After receiving the total amount of ₹10,000, the accused allegedly threatened to kill the complainant if he informed anyone about the incident and left the area. The complainant later made inquiries and reportedly learned that the man had allegedly been using a false police identity to collect money. The accused was identified in the report as Mohammed Hussain, also known as Haddi Kamruddin Sheikh, a resident of Gomtipur.
After the complaint was reported to the police, Riverfront West police allegedly arranged a trap and arrested the accused. The report does not provide details of the sections invoked, the recovery of the transferred money or the next court proceedings.
The case highlights a public-safety concern in a major urban recreational space, where visitors may be vulnerable to threats involving personal photographs, social media exposure and false claims of official authority. The police investigation and subsequent legal proceedings will establish the allegations against the arrested man. Further action will follow the investigation, according to the report.
