Census 2027 Delhi Schedule Advances With 2.3 Crore Residents Counted

Delhi’s second phase of Census 2027 is likely to begin on January 10, 2027, with residents given 15 days for self-enumeration before officials start the house-to-house population exercise on January 25, senior officials said, according to a report by Millennium Post – Delhi.

The self-enumeration window is expected to run from January 10 to 24. Field operations will then continue from January 25 to February 28, followed by a revisional round between March 1 and 5, according to the proposed schedule.

A meeting chaired by the Delhi chief secretary and attended by census officials was scheduled to discuss preparations for the second phase of the exercise. The dates remain subject to the ongoing administrative process and the final implementation arrangements.

The first phase of Census 2027 in Delhi concluded on June 14. It covered nearly 76 lakh houses and approximately 55 lakh households. Officials said enumerators recorded that more than 2.3 crore people were ordinarily residing in the city during that phase.

The second phase will focus on population enumeration and require respondents to answer 40 questions. The questionnaire is expected to collect information on caste, religion, parents’ particulars, migration, education and occupation. Caste details are set to be captured for the first time since the 1931 census, according to the report.

The form will seek personal information including name, sex, date of birth, age, marital status and relationship to the head of the household. It will also cover nationality, religion, Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe status, disability, mother tongue and other languages known.

Respondents will be asked about educational qualifications, employment status, occupation, industry and class of worker. Migration-related questions will include birthplace, place of last residence, reason for migration and the duration of stay at the current residence.

The questionnaire also includes family and financial details, such as the number of children and the number of bank accounts. Residents may be asked whether they have a mobile phone number, Aadhaar number, voter ID or passport. Aadhaar and other identification details will be provided only if available, and submitting Aadhaar is voluntary.

Information about the date and birthplace of parents is also included in the proposed coverage. The census manual sets out procedures for enumerators and supervisors, house numbering, preparation of layout maps, protection of confidentiality and enumeration of homeless people.

Census 2027 is being conducted in two phases, with house-listing and housing census operations preceding population enumeration. The schedule and questionnaire form part of the preparations for the nationwide exercise. The next formal step for Delhi is the meeting involving the chief secretary and census officials, followed by the planned self-enumeration window from January 10, 2027.
