Chennai Metro Rail Limited will advance the start of passenger services on the 15-km Yellow Line to 6 am from October 23, responding to commuter feedback on the newly opened Phase II Corridor 4 stretch between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani.
The revised schedule will cover all 11 elevated stations on the corridor, with trains operating in both directions from 6 am to 9 pm. The last services will depart from both Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani at 9 pm.
From Monday to Saturday, trains will run every 10 minutes during the morning peak from 8 am to 11 am and the evening peak from 5 pm to 8 pm. During non-peak hours, including the 6 am to 8 am period, the frequency will be one train every 15 minutes.
On Sundays and public holidays, the Yellow Line will operate at 15-minute intervals throughout the day, from 6 am to 9 pm. CMRL will not apply a separate peak-hour timetable on those days.
The schedule change comes less than two weeks after CMRL began regular passenger services on the Corridor 4 stretch on October 11. The corridor links Poonamallee Bypass in Chennai’s western region with Vadapalani, an important transport and commercial area in the city.
CMRL said the revised timings are intended to improve connectivity for early-morning commuters travelling towards Vadapalani and Poonamallee. The change places the first train service before the main morning peak, when commuters begin travelling to workplaces, schools and transport interchanges.
The Yellow Line forms part of Chennai Metro’s Phase II network and is currently operating on the specified 15-km stretch with elevated stations. For passengers using the line from October 23, the principal change will be the earlier 6 am opening, while the 9 pm closing time and the announced weekday and holiday frequencies will remain applicable under the revised timetable.
